WESTERN GROWERS APPLAUDS WANGER'S ORDER TO TURN THE PUMPS BACK ON

 

 

IRVINE, CA (May 26, 2010) -  Tom Nassif, Western Growers president and CEO, made the following statement regarding yesterday's order by U.S. District Judge Oliver Wanger to temporarily lift restrictions on the pumping of water in the Delta:

 

"The federal district court has acknowledged the devastating effect that pumping restrictions have had on agriculture in the Central Valley as well as on the human environment and recognized that water flows in the Delta are not the only factor in the decline of salmon.  He has said that a sensible balance is required between the needs of fish species and those of humans.  We are hopeful that a similar, common sense decision will be made by Judge Wanger very soon regarding the Delta smelt. After three years of drought, this is welcome news to our farms and farmers.  Perhaps now we can let good science and scientists examine every factor contributing to the adversity in the Delta ecosystem and truly find a way that agriculture, fishing, municipalities, industry and the environment can better manage water resources and survive."

 

Western Growers is an 85-year-old agricultural trade association whose members from Arizona and California grow, pack and ship about half of the nation's fresh produce.
