DELAURO STATEMENT ON HAGEN

USDA FOOD SAFETY APPOINTMENT

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement in response to the recess appointment of Dr. Elisabeth Hagen to become the new US Department of Agriculture Undersecretary of Food Safety.

"I commend President Obama for the recess appointment of Dr. Elisabeth Hagen to this critical position.  The USDA Undersecretary for Food Safety position has been vacant for far too long and the resulting absence of strong leadership has delayed progress in achieving important food safety goals at the department.  As the number of significant recalls involving meat products this year can attest, significant work remains if we are to improve the safety of meat and poultry products, and the appointment of Dr. Hagen is a positive first step in that effort."
