AGRICULTURE SECRETARY TOM VILSACK SAYS THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE IS LOOKING FOR ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO HELP PRODUCERS AND ALL OF RURAL AMERICA.
Tom Vilsack, Agriculture Secretary: This is a USDA that recognizes the full breadth of our responsibilities, not just production agriculture but to rural America that sort of surrounds production agriculture and compliments what production agriculture is doing.
VILSACK SAYS THE GROWING BIOFUELS INDUSTRY IS AN AREA THAT CAN HELP FARMERS AND RURAL AREAS ECONOMICALLY.
Vilsack: We know that there can be as many as a million jobs created in rural America and we know that there is going to be substantial capital investment taking place in rural America. We know that waste product that had no value now becomes a particularly valuable commodity.
AND AS FOR STABILIZING RURAL AMERICA'S SHRINKING POPULATION, VILSACK SAYS NEW AND CREATIVE WAYS ARE NEEDED TO KEEP YOUNG PEOPLE IN FARMING.
Vilsack: Is there a way in which we could provide some kind of tax relief, some kind of benefit that you would receive in addition to what we are doing with CRP and the transition system? Is there some way you could encourage a young person to work on the farm?
ON THE POSITIVE SIDE, VILSACK SAYS MANY PRODUCERS ARE FINANCIALLY STABLE WITH HEALTHY DEBT TO ASSET RATIOS.
Vilsack: In addition, income levels, as we indicated, are going to be increased by twenty four percent net farm income.
